The song “God Bless America” was written as a (sung) prayer. Enjoy the July 4th holiday, and let this song help us to be a little more grateful for all the privileges of living in a free country!
Author:
Irving Berlin, 1918; revised 1938
Spoken Introduction:
While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free,
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.

God bless America, land that I love
Stand beside her and guide her
Through the night with the light from above
From the mountains To the prairies,
To the ocean white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.
The unofficial national anthem of the United States was composed by an immigrant who left his home in Siberia for the USA when he was only five years old. The original version of “God Bless America” was written by Irving Berlin (1888-1989) during the summer of 1918 at Camp Upton, located in Yaphank, Long Island, for his Ziegfeld-style revue, Yip, Yip, Yaphank. “Make her victorious on land and foam, God Bless America…” ran the original lyrics. However, Irving decided that the solemn tone of “God Bless America” was somewhat out of keeping with the more comedic elements of the show, so the song was laid aside.
In the fall of 1938, as war was again threatening Europe, he decided to write a “peace” song. He recalled his lyrics of “God Bless America” from twenty years earlier, then made some alterations to reflect the different state of the world. Singer Kate Smith introduced the revised “God Bless America” during her radio broadcast on Armistice Day, 1938. The song was an immediate sensation; the sheet music was in great demand.
Berlin’s file of manuscripts & lyric sheets for this quintessentially American song includes manuscripts in the hand of his longtime musical secretary, Helmy Kresa (he himself did not read and write music), as well as lyric sheets, and corrected proof copies for the sheet music.
These materials document not only the speed with which this song was revised, but also its author’s attention to detail. The first proof copy is dated October 31, 1938; the earliest “final” version of the song is a manuscript dated November 2; and Kate Smith’s historic broadcast took place on November 11. So, documents show the song’s step-by-step evolution from the original version of 1918 to the tune we now know.
The manuscripts mentioned above are part of the Irving Berlin Collection, a remarkable collection that includes his personal papers as well as the records of the Irving Berlin Music Corp. It was presented to the Library of Congress in 1992, by his three daughters, Mary Ellin Barrett, Linda Louise Emmet, and Elizabeth Irving Peters.
What an amazing song! Isn’t it wonderful that we have been so lucky to be connected with people who are able to put to words our deepest thoughts and emotions? Irving Berlin was truly inspired. Close your eyes and listen to his message. Does it not touch your soul? Can’t you just see crashing waves- the majesty of the mountains? All of the beautiful people working every day, alive and free because of the dream of our beloved Founding Fathers?
As this song is being broadcasted through out the world on various occasions, there is this incredible overwhelming desire to jump up and sing with all the energy of the soul!

A declaration for all time

declaration of independence text

Our country's founding document retains its genius even as the times, and our values, change.

The story of the Declaration of Independence has been mined so deeply and disseminated so widely that most of the myths surrounding it have long since been dispelled. It was not, we now know, on the 4th of July, 1776, that Americans declared their independence, but on the 2nd of July — when the Second Continental Congress formally resolved that the colonies ought to be independent and that bonds to the British Crown should be dissolved (leading John Adams to write to his wife that July 2 would henceforth be celebrated by Americans as their "Day of Deliverance" and "solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other").

The Declaration itself was signed two days later, but, frankly, many considered it a not terribly important document, more "dress and ornament rather than Body, Soul or Substance," as Adams put it. It took months before an official copy arrived in Europe (the original dispatched by the Congress got lost), according to historian Pauline Maier, and in the decades that followed, it did not stand out for most Americans as the classic statement of their national principles. A British parliamentarian, admittedly biased, called it "a wretched composition, very ill written, drawn up with a view to captivate the people."

One reason it didn't immediately take its rightful place in history may be that it was viewed very differently then than it is now. Indeed, even Thomas Jefferson, when he drafted it, didn't see it as fundamentally about liberty or equality or the rights of man, as we do today. His focus, says Maier, was less on individuals than on colonial grievances and the prerogative of the people, collectively, to "alter and abolish" any government that failed to represent them or to ensure their safety and happiness.

Keeping safe on Independence Day: Plus: Where to see the best fireworks shows

independence day

As families take to the outdoors to celebrate the Fourth of July, emergency room personnel and firework safety officials are urging them to use caution.
Community Hospital emergency room charge nurse Aaron Wilson said hospitals most commonly see burns and heat exhaustion over the Fourth of July weekend.
Although burns aren't unexpected on the Fourth of July, they are few.
Wilson said the hospital sees a handful of fireworks-related burn injuries each year.
Nationwide, about 10,000 fireworks injuries are reported each year, he said.
Many injuries come from an unlikely source.
According to Nancy Blogin, President of the National Council on Fireworks Safety, sparklers are a common threat to children.
About 16 percent of all consumer fireworks burns are caused by sparklers.
Those under 15 are most susceptible to getting burned during the Fourth of July, Wilson said.
"We want adults to [handle] the fireworks but if children are using them, we need adult supervision," Wilson said.
Fireworks aren't the only risky behavior associated with the Fourth.
As common as fireworks to the Independence Day celebration are parades.
Those attending parades or family picnics are at risk for heat exhaustion, Wilson said.
Other than keeping hydrated and wearing loose fitting clothes to avoid heat exhaustion, Wilson said people should be aware of the signs that heat exhaustion is setting in.
They include muscle cramps, headache, pain, dizziness and sometimes nausea.
An increase in travel and alcohol consumption also leads to increased emergency room visits over the holiday weekend.
Wear a seat belt, Wilson said, and get a designated driver.
In terms of keeping your children safe from fireworks, Wilson said the best way to keep safe is to avoid using fireworks altogether.
"Maybe not even to use fireworks and maybe just use a fireworks show done professionally."

If you’re an American, today is a great day as it is the day that back in 1776 our founding father put forth the Declaration of Independence, securing our break away from Great Britian and our independce as the United States of America. Although, beer, fireworks and grilling are probably things more along the lines of what your typical Fourth of July sounds like, as opposed to thinking about our founding fathers but that’s just a technicality – today is a day of fun.
google4thofjuly
Google is no stranger to fun and if you remember back on May 21st they updated their logo to celebrate Pac-Man’s 30th anniversary by including a fully playable Pac-Man game. Sure, it was annoying and wasted the hours of desk job workers everywhere but it was a very unqiue and innovative approach to their normal Google Doodles. What was even better about the Pac-Man Google logo is the fact that it was written utilizing HTML5 and JavaScript making it functional on a wide array of devices including the Flash-shunning iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Didn’t get a chance to check it out? You’re in luck as Google still has it up at google.com/pacman.
Now that the 30th anniversary of such a classic game has passed and July 4th is upon us, Google has again updated their logo to celebrate the occasion. This time around, instead of including a playable game, Google has included a fully functioning, patriotically themed Rube Golberg machine.
Thanks to the same programming methods utilized with the making of Pac-Man game, you can enjoy this patriotic Rube Golberg machine on all of your Flash hating iDevices.
In all seriousness though I’d like to take this time to wish all of our American readers a very happy Fourth of July. Be sure to be safe, have fun and eat some great food all in the name of America.
