Navy Advancement

Honoring nation's veterans during Memorial Day
Throughout the Brainerd lakes area this holiday weekend, events are planned to recognize and remember those in the military service who served the United States. 
Both Sunday and Monday, ceremonies are planned with speeches by military leaders, rifle salutes, musical presentations and much more.

Brainerd's Memorial Day ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Laurel Street bridge. A wreath will be tossed into the Mississippi River in memory of those veterans lost at sea. A prayer will be given by Pastor Kristin Oltmann with the firing of a rifle salute and taps being played by Archie Katchie.

There will be a short march to the All Veterans Memorial next to the Crow Wing County Courthouse where a wreath will be placed in honor of all U.S. veterans of the armed forces followed by a prayer from Oltmann and taps by Katchie.

In honor of veterans of the Bataan Death March, a brief ceremony will be conducted at the Bataan Memorial, next to the National Guard Armory on Wright Street with the placing of a wreath by veterans of the Bataan Death March and a prayer by Oltmann. The Memorial Day parade will begin at 10 a.m., starting with lineup on First Avenue Northeast, then on to B Street Northeast to Second Avenue Northeast to G Street Northeast to Third Avenue Northeast then north to Evergreen Cemetery.

Prelude music will be performed by the Brainerd High School band under the direction of Chris Fogderud.

Master of ceremonies will be Dick Lyscio. Oltmann will give the invocation.

Raising of the American flag with "To the Colors" will be presented by the Brainerd High School band.

Pledge of Allegiance will be led by Shane Johnson.

The national anthem will be by the Brainerd High School band.

Colors will be posted by the color guard of veterans organizations and placing of memorial wreaths will be done by representatives of auxiliary units of veterans organizations such as Marine Corps, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Military Order of Purple Heart. Honorable mention by the Gold Star Mothers.

Greetings will be offered by Baxter Mayor Darrel Olson, Brainerd Mayor James Wallin, Crow Wing County Commissioner Phil Trusty and John Boeder of Evergreen Cemetery Association.

Jillian Anderson will deliver the Gettysburg Address.

Pillager sixth-grader Kailynn Heide, national winner of an Elks Lodge essay contest, will deliver "The American Dream" essay.

Guest speaker will be Capt. Joseph Sanganoo.

A special music selection will be performed by the Brainerd High School band.

Benediction will be given by Oltmann.

Retiring of the colors will be performed by the color guard.

Firing of the rifle volley will be VFW.

Taps, with echo, will be done by the BHS buglers.

Gen. Vessey to attend Family Fun Day at Cragun's

Cragun's Resort, East Gull Lake, will present the first Family Fun Day Sunday and free golf for veterans on Sunday and Monday.

These events will honor service members and their families with onsite military personnel from all branches of the service. A flag presentation and color guard will start the event at noon Sunday.

Retired Gen. John Vessey Jr., former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will be on hand to join the flag presentation ceremony and meet and greet interested members of the military. Vessey was appointed chairman by President Ronald Reagan. He was the last four-star combat veteran of World War II on active service. After retiring from the Army, Vessey became involved in efforts to account for military personnel listed as missing in action from the Vietnam War. The general was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992.

Fun for the entire family is planned and 100 percent of donations raised at the event will go toward the Minnesota Military Family Foundation. Family Fun Day activities will run from 1-4 p.m. Sunday and will include a silent auction fundraiser, food and beverage booths, Humvee rides, a rock climbing wall, military obstacle course, Patriot Guard Riders drive-through, carnival games and more. All activities are free and open to the public.

Aitkin

AITKIN - The Healing Garden Memorial Ceremony will be 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Riverwood Healthcare Center, Bunker Hill Drive, Aitkin.

There will be a Memorial Day service at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Lakeview Cemetery in Aitkin. There will be a dedication of wreath to waters followed by a potluck at the Aitkin VFW.

Backus

BACKUS - Richard Horn, treasurer for the American Legion, Department of Minnesota, and president of Allied Charities of Minnesota, will give Memorial Day addresses at Backus Evergreen Cemetery and Ponto Lake cemeteries conducted by the Backus American Legion and Auxiliary.

The tribute to deceased veterans who served their country will include a color guard rifle salute, laying of a memorial poppy wreath and taps played by students from the Pine River-Backus School District. Backus services will begin at 10 a.m. and the Ponto Lake service will follow the conclusion of the Backus memorial about 11 a.m., both on Monday.

Horn, who along with his wife, Mary, resides in Melrose, is a certified public accountant and an Air Force veteran, serving from 1961 to 1965 as a heavy equipment operator. He was stationed at Mountain Home, Idaho. He is a past 6th Legion District commander and currently serves as treasurer for the Department of Minnesota and as finance officer for the 6th District. He is also president of Allied Charities of Minnesota, an umbrella group representing state charitable gaming organizations. He is a candidate for department vice commander for the 6th and 9th Legion districts.

Crosby

CROSBY - A Memorial Day service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Lakewood Cemetery in Crosby. Master of ceremonies will be John J. Pappas, Myrin-James Post No. 443, Ironton; advancement of colors by Post No. 443 Color Guard; the national anthem by the Cuyuna Range Community Band; Pledge of Allegiance led by Pappas; invocation by Pastor Gerald Fisher; "From a Distance" sung by Kris Hasskamp; "Invisible Eagle" by the community band directed by Chris Halvorson; Memorial Day address by Fisher; "Our Heritage" by the community band; roll call of deceased veterans and auxiliary members; reading of "The Average Soldier," by Mary Pappas-Ladd; "God Bless the USA" by Hasskamp; "Marches of Armed Forces" and "An American Celebration" by the community band; benediction by Fisher; salute to the dead, Myrin-James American Legion Post No. 443 Firing Squad; taps by the community band; and the retirement of colors by the color guard.

In case of inclement weather, the service will be moved to the Mayberry Auditorium at the Crosby-Ironton High School.

Crosslake

CROSSLAKE - Crosslake Lutheran Church will host a community observance of Memorial Day at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Outdoor Worship Center on Daggett Pine Road in Crosslake, across from the Crosslake Community Center baseball field.

Col. George W. Schwantes, a retired Army chaplain, with more than 32 years of military service and an ordained Lutheran minister of 38 years, will be the guest speaker. He also will speak at the 8:30 a.m. worship service at Crosslake Lutheran Church that same morning. The church is on Route 66 in downtown Crosslake.

The Memorial Day celebration will feature patriotic music; a bugler playing taps; a contingent of American Legion veterans led by Joe Wiltsey firing an honorary salute to the dead; and an aerial fly-over by the North Star Squadron, a group of four fixed wing aircraft flown by experienced pilots who participate in air shows throughout the Midwest. The leader of this squadron this year is Steve Knight, who has been an adviser to the Civil Air Patrol and now lives in Mission Hill, S.D.

Veterans present will be honored. The theme of the day is "Our continuing search for peace and goodwill among all people." Those attending the ceremony may stay in their cars and listen to the service over the radio or sit outside on benches and chairs provided by the Outdoor Worship Center. The attendees can bring lawn chairs and blankets.

The annual Memorial Day Ceremony, presented by the Crosslake/Fifty Lakes American Legion Post 500, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Crosslake Pinewood Cemetery on County Road 36, one block south of County Road 3.

More than 100 veterans are buried at the Pinewood Cemetery. The ceremony will include a wreath laying by the local Girl Scout/Junior Brownie Troop and full military honors provided by the Post Color Guard. Crosslake's former Mayor Darrell Swanson will be the guest speaker. Swanson's father is one of the veterans buried at Pinewood. John Carlson will share his talent by singing a patriotic selection. Taps will be played. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket.

Deerwood

DEERWOOD - A Memorial Day service will begin at 8 a.m. Monday with a tribute to all armed forces who served on water at the Deerwood Boat Landing on Serpent Lake. The service will continue at 8:30 a.m. at the Deerwood Scandia Cemetery with the advancement of colors, Pledge of Allegiance, invocation, speaker Jan Manary, roll call of the deceased, recitation, salute, taps, retirement of colors, benediction, soloist Kris Hasskamp and patriotic selections by the Cuyuna Range Community Band. Bring your own lawn chairs.

In case of inclement weather, the program will be in the meeting room at the Deerwood American Legion Club.

Emily

EMILY - A Memorial Day service will be 9 a.m. Monday at the Pine Ridge Cemetery in Emily.

All past or present military people are encouraged to attend the service and stand or sit behind the cross so they can be honored as the names of deceased military personnel are read.

Come in uniform or any part of the uniform if possible. This invitation includes current reserve or guard military.

Members of the Lions of Emily, Outing and Fifty Lakes as well as the Myrin James Legion Post will be in attendance.

The public should bring lawn chairs for comfort during the ceremony. Emily United Methodist Church will serve coffee and doughnuts following the service.

Hackensack

HACKENSACK - A Memorial Day service at Finnely Cemetery sponsored by Hackensack American Legion Auxiliary Unit 202 will be at 1 p.m. May 30.

Memorial Day services sponsored by American Legion Post 202, Auxiliary and SAL will be May 31. Members will meet at 9 a.m. at the Legion with honors at 9:30 a.m. at the city park.

There will be a Cass County Killed in Action Memorial parade to Boy River to honor the Navy veterans.

Formal services will be at 10 a.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery, including roll call of deceased veterans at the All Veterans Memorial. Guest speaker will be retired Rear Adm. Hank McKinney, U.S. Navy. In case of rain, program will be at Hackensack Legion Post 202.

Little Falls

LITTLE FALLS - The Minnesota Patriot Guard has been invited to participate in the Minnesota State Cemetery Memorial Day event 1:30 p.m. May 30.

This year's program will consist of speakers including special guest speaker retired Rear Adm. Henry McKinney, U.S. Navy. An instrumental prelude by the Richfield Symphonic Band will begin at 1:30 p.m. and the traditional parade of flags will open the formal program at 2 p.m. Parade marshal is Robert Mace, member of the Waite Park American Legion Post 428. Placing of wreaths will be featured during the program. Following the program, the Little Falls American Legion Auxiliary Unit will host a reception on site. In honor of Memorial Day, the Military Museum at Camp Ripley will be open for visitors.

Due to limited seating, attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Longville

LONGVILLE - Longville's Memorial Day program will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Longville Elementary School. Following the program at the school, there will be a march to Riverside Cemetery with a special appearance by the Northland High School Marching Band, directed by Ben Kinzer. Linda Blackman will be the guest speaker.

Nisswa

NISSWA - A Memorial Day service will be noon May 31 at the Nisswa American Legion.

Guest speakers will include state Rep. John Ward, DFL-Brainerd, the keynote speaker; state Sen. Paul Koering, R-Fort Ripley; former state Sen. Don Samuelson; and Nisswa Mayor Brian Lehman.

Jim Starkey of Post No. 627 will be the master of ceremonies.

The ceremony will begin by recognizing all people with family members currently serving in the military.

The three winners of the Nisswa Elementary School Memorial Day essay contest will be present to read their essays on the topic, "The real heroes were the ones who didn't return home."

Brad Wallace and Jackie Kline from Grace United Methodist Church will perform renditions of the national anthem, "Proud to be an American," "America the Beautiful," "There She Stands" and the "The Lord's Prayer."

The daughters of Scott "Mike" Thurlow, an active member of Post No. 627 who passed away several years ago, will throw a wreath into Nisswa Lake in honor of all who died at sea.

Father George Zeck will serve as chaplain.

Onamia

ONAMIA - The Memorial Day Pow-Pow will be noon to 5 p.m. Monday at the Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post. The event is hosted by the AMVETS Post 53, Ladies Auxiliary, museum staff and community members at this annual cultural event. Bring the family to participate in this social gathering honoring veterans past and present. Experience firsthand the excitement and joy of a contemporary powwow. This outdoor event is free and open to the public; regular admission rates apply for entrance to the museum.

Pequot Lakes

PEQUOT LAKES - The Pequot Lakes American Legion Ben Krueger Post No. 49, the Jenkins VFW Northern Post No. 3839, and their respective Auxiliaries are jointly sponsoring the annual Memorial Day program. The memorial service will start at 10 a.m. May 31 and will be in the Pequot Lakes High School auditorium. The program will feature an address by Sgt. Andrew Gravdahl of Pequot Lakes. Gravdahl served in Iraq for 16 months in 2006-07 with the 1st Brigade Combat Team and is currently with the pre-mobilization training team. The Legion and VFW Color Guards will perform the ceremonials.

After the ceremonies at the auditorium, the color guards will march to the Pequot Lakes Cemetery to present honors and then proceed down Sibley Avenue to Sibley Park. A wreath will be placed in Lake Sibley honoring departed Navy veterans. The Boy and Girl Scouts will be marching along and the audience is invited to follow.

A light lunch will be served at the Pequot American Legion Post at the close of these ceremonies. The public is also invited for the lunch, which is free of charge.

Pillager

PILLAGER - Memorial Day services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Pillager School. Following the service there will be a short ceremony at Wildwood and Gull River cemeteries.

Pine River

PINE RIVER - The Pine River American Legion will host a Memorial Day service at 9:30 a.m. May 31 at the Pine River Dam. The ceremony will include a reading by Keith Gardner, a presentation of flowers by the auxiliary and a color guard rifle salute.
