Philly Beer Week Kicks off Friday Night

Philly Beer Week begins Friday night outside Independence Visitors Center with a ceremony known as the opening tap. The mallet that Mayor Nutter will swing to tap that first keg made many stops Friday.

Like the Olympic torch, The Hammer of Glory or HOG passes through many hands on its way to the opening ceremony. First stop, The Grey Lodge in Northeast Philly where a volunteer on bicycle sets out for the Draught Horse Pub at Temple University and a crew of waiting skateboarders.

It's about a two mile run to the Philadelphia Brewing Company where the HOG is passed on again..

And on it goes. Before the day ended the hammer was transported by hearse, by wheelbarrow, tricycle and strippers. No doubt a wacky way to jump start this 10-day event known as Philly Beer week.
